IS IT “GROUNDHOG DAY” IN YOUR HEALTH PLAN?

BY BEN CONNER I feel like I am living the 1993 movie “Groundhog Day,” starring Bill Murray. In that movie, Bill Murray relives the exact same day, February 2nd, over and over again. It is literally the exact same day, same circumstances, same people, and same place. At first he finds comfort, predictability, and slight improvement in his experience. He then finds despair in the monotony. Does this sound like your health plan? It has been famously quoted that “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” So, what are you doing as the manager of your health plan to change the “Groundhog Day” experience of raising deductibles, removing or raising copays, raising out of pocket maximums, raising premiums… and even worse, low-to-no pay increases? It is time to change the way we are doing what we have always done.; it is simply not working! It is time for employers (and employee benefits advisors) to become a meaningful part of the healthcare supply chain. We need to focus on assisting our employees, and helping them make wise and financially responsible decisions in the healthcare system. Without our help, it is next to impossible for our employees to know how to do this. Let’s schedule a time to talk about moving on from the “Groundhog Day” experience. After all, who wants to be stuck with a February day in Indiana anyway?
