Our History
Henry Clay Conner Jr. founded Conner Insurance in 1949 after attending school through Aetna Insurance after serving the U.S. in WWII. After serving in World War II, Clay Conner Jr. returned with a no-nonsense approach to business, instilling resilience and integrity into the company. Despite physical challenges resulting from being MIA during the war, including poor eyesight that prevented him from pursuing law, he built a thriving insurance business from the ground up. His relationships—often formed through church and community involvement—became the foundation of his client base. Clay believed that serving clients went beyond transactions; he treated them as friends, ensuring their trust and security. As his decades of leadership came to a close, he entrusted the business to his four sons, knowing they would uphold his values and continue Conner Insurance’s growth.
Initially, Conner Insurance offered property and casualty and life insurance. Through quality service, emphasis on relationships, and innovative design, the company shaped itself into the business it is today.
Second Generation Ownership
The second generation consisting of Clay’s four boys (Clay Conner III, Jack Conner, Jim Conner, and Tom Conner) carried forward their father’s commitment to integrity and client-first service. When they took ownership, they followed their father’s 10-year roadmap with his unwavering support. Under their leadership, Conner Insurance expanded to five branches with 60 employees. However, recognizing the importance of focus and strategic growth, they made the decision to scale back operations to Indianapolis. Throughout their journey, the Conner brothers remained dedicated to their father’s principles of keeping Jesus Christ at the center, loyalty, and transparency—values that continue to shape the company’s legacy today.
Third Generation Ownership
Just as Clay Jr. worked alongside his sons, a new generation of Conners grew up immersed in the family business. In 2015, the next generation officially took over ownership, ushering in a new chapter of leadership while preserving the core values that define Conner Insurance. Today, the third generation (Ben Conner, Todd Hufford, Annie Spencer, Ryan Spencer, Joshua Conner, and Zack Conner) leads the company with a steadfast commitment to prioritizing relationships over transactions. Their leadership ensures that transparency, reliability, and a client-first philosophy remain at the heart of everything Conner Insurance does. By the grace of God, Conner stands where it is today, and it is a blessing to be in a business where we have the opportunity to serve and walk alongside our clients during some of life’s most significant moments.
